Hamilton Island, one of the Iconic Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by US Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination situated on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a US-based private equity firm for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment that the family owners has built in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
The Reported Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending customary regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement saying they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton covers over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately thirty percent of the area is built upon, including a substantial range of amenities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a functioning airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, sustaining a large on-island community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and from the south.

Blackstone has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
