The WTA Tour is already a thrilling sport featuring incredible competitors in the world. It does crave more attention, but that focus should be on its real matches and dynamic personalities.

The worst scenario the sport needs is to fuel old arguments about financial parity or the format of women's matches—discussions this event is certain to spark. The position of world No. 1 carries immense symbolic weight. Unfortunately, Sabalenka has leveraged her status to open the door for those who seek to diminish her own sport.

A Controversial Lead-Up

The promotional run-up has been more problematic than expected. In a December appearance, Sabalenka ventured into the issue of transgender athletes in tennis, making controversial statements that opposed their inclusion. This shifted the focus from the exhibition itself.

Importantly, there are zero trans women playing on the women's professional circuit. A more pressing issue is the persistent misogyny female players face. Paradoxically, Sabalenka made these comments while sitting alongside Kyrgios, a figure who has pleaded guilty to domestic assault, has been accused of misogynistic comments toward other athletes, and has promoted content from notorious misogynists.

The Drive for Profit

There's no denying, the event has garnered attention. It will be broadcast by a major network and has earned Sabalenka a spot on a popular talk show. The venue in Dubai will likely be well-attended.

However, publicity is not synonymous with good. This exhibition is a calculated attempt to generate headlines for financial gain. It is a product of its time, akin to celebrity boxing matches where notoriety trumps athletic prowess. No serious analyst believes such events are beneficial for their respective sports. Both athletes are under the management of the same agency, which will benefit financially from the arrangement.

The Real Path Forward

The 2025 season was one of the best for the WTA in recent memory, thanks to the rivalry between Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek and enhanced by a talented group of stars like the American prodigy, Elena Rybakina, and others. They produced thrilling matches and genuine competition.

Ultimately, the most effective method to appreciate the excellence of women's tennis is to watch women's tennis. Instead of staged spectacles that cheapen the same game they claim to promote.
